No Cabernet Franc was used in the final blend of Grand-Puy-Lacoste (70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot). Sixty-eight percent of the total production was utilized in this attractive effort. Soft, round, and gentle, it possesses a noteworthy blackberry/cassis character, and is ideal for consuming over the next 10-12 years. It is ripe, fruity, medium-bodied, and round. Drink: now-2011.

This wine has improved significantly in cask, now exhibiting a dense purple color as well as high but sweet tannin. Essence of cassis liqueur is the predominant aroma. That component follows through on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and rich, this wine will require 5-6 years of cellaring after bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2017.

The 1998 reveals a classic creme de cassis-scented nose along with powerful, tight, firmly-structured flavors. While moderate tannin is present, there is more than enough extract and depth behind the tannin to support the enthusiastic rating. However, this wine needs 3-4 more years of cellaring, and should keep for 16-18 years. This is a top-flight claret. Drink 2004-2019


Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results inparticularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.


Pauillac, Red Bordeaux

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac’s renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac’s wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
